What does the experience of disability tell us about what it means to be created in the image of God? What does scripture say (and not say) about disability? How does faith inform the church’s care for humans with disabilities? This course will delve into these questions and more through discussions of scripture, theology, and disability theory. Participants will come away with a better understanding of the theological questions the experience of disability raises, the hermeneutical models disability brings to the reading of scripture, and the church’s vocation to be with and for humans with disabilities. One session will be led by the Rt. Rev. Dr. Audrey Scanlan, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Central Pennsylvania.

This course is the foundational course in Christian theology. Starting from the central experience of God in prayer and worship, we explore what it means to know the Triune God in the light of Scripture, the ecumenical councils, contemporary theology, and our Anglican heritage. We will discuss throughout the course what it means for a priest to be a theologian, one who is charged with teaching, as well as pastoring and administering the sacraments. We focus on the importance of theology in our life together, and discuss ways that you can encourage theological reflection in your ministries. The second half of the course is focused on Anglican ecclesiology in particular.

This course is designed to enable the student to construct a sermon/homily rooted in the exegesis of assigned biblical passages. In addition, students will gain experience explaining and applying biblical passages and delivering a biblical sermon/homily. A year of a scriptural studies that include an exposition of exegetical methods is a pre-requisite for this course.

The aim of the course is to help students understand what is required to preach effectively and to practice what they understand. Opportunities to preach and have their efforts recorded on video for playback and critique by the instructor is an essential element of this course.

It is strongly recommended that students take Homiletics 1 before taking Anglican Homiletics.

This is a course in the basic history of the Episcopal Church.  We will begin with a consideration of the planting of colonial Anglican churches and the struggle for stability and identity, especially in the wake of the American Revolution.  Each week, in a linear sequence, we will read from Robert Prichard’s “A History of the Episcopal Church”,  (Morehouse, 1991) which will be used as the principle text.  The course will conclude with a decade of renewal (1980-90) and some reflection on directions and developments, which continue to shape our church of the present.

Scholarship funds to help you  pay for this course are available if you can demonstrate need and if you are a member of a parish of the Episcopal Diocese of Central PA.  For information on scholarships please contact the Dean.
