Join the Rev. Erin Jean Warde in a 10-week discernment of how we are in relationship with alcohol. In this course, the discernment will be both interior and exterior, as you learn more about alcohol in the global and cultural context, and are given tools to look inward spiritually. You’ll explore how alcohol affects us in mind, body, and soul, such that you will be encouraged to get prayerfully curious about how drinking shows up in your life, while trusting how the Spirit leads you into answering the question: How do I want to be in relationship with alcohol? This course will engage spiritual reflection and practical theology, as it covers how alcohol affects a variety of aspects of life and faith, such as: cultural norms, its use in religious spaces, hospitality, embodiment, trauma, social justice, releasing judgment around substances, and caring for those who struggle in their relationship with alcohol.

This 10-week course will be offered via Zoom on Wednesdays from 5:30-6:30 pm, beginning November 8, 2023 and ending January 31, 2024.

The course can be taken for credit as a part of the Stevenson School for Ministry for $300. It can also be taken as a continuing education class that allows you to sit in on classes, participate in conversations, and no assignment submission is needed for $150. This course explores the nature of the Christian moral life in relation to specific topics, such as care for the environment, wealth and poverty, bioethics, etc. We will apply the major theories of classical and contemporary philosophical ethics and their different understandings of moral psychology and action to these questions and pay special attention to the ways moral reasoning and action relate to the central doctrines of Christian theology and to the sacramental transformation of human community most of all.

When asked about a shared theology, Episcopalians often reply, “Look in our Book of Common Prayer. Or, better yet, come pray with us!”  At the root of this response is liturgical theology, the understanding that the liturgy is a source of our theology.  In this course, we will explore the question, “What is liturgical theology?” as well as “How do we engage the theology in our liturgy?”  Using Kevin Irwin’s book Context and Text as our main guide, we will build a practical methodology for liturgical theology. Focusing primarily on the Eucharist, students will construct their own liturgical theology using their parish as the context.

Many have suggested that to understand Episcopalians, one must understand the Book of Common Prayer. In this course, we will discuss the history, theology, and spirituality of the Book of Common Prayer and other liturgical resources authorized for use in the Episcopal Church. In particular, we will focus on the liturgical year, the Daily Office, Proper Liturgies for Special Days, Initiation, Eucharist, and occasional services. We will use multiple media including readings, Populi discussion groups, and live online discussions.

This is a course in the basic history of the Episcopal Church.  We will begin with a consideration of the planting of colonial Anglican churches and the struggle for stability and identity, especially in the wake of the American Revolution.  Each week, in a linear sequence, we will read from Robert Prichard’s “A History of the Episcopal Church”,  (Morehouse, 1991) which will be used as the principle text.  The course will conclude with a decade of renewal (1980-90) and some reflection on directions and developments, which continue to shape our church of the present.

Throughout the course, the spirituality of preaching will be stressed especially for preachers involved in bivocational or non-stipendiary ministry. Three sermons will be discussed and delivered: liturgical, pastoral, and prophetic sermons. Students will preach three times, videotaping themselves and the class will discuss the sermons via Zoom.
